The photograph accompanying this article is that of 437 Corporal Robert Underhill of the 2/13th Regiment, Prince Albert's Light Infantry, taken in 1870.
Corporal Underhill took first prize for the best turned out soldier amongst all dismounted corps at the Divisional Athletics Sports meeting, held at Aldership, Hampshire, on 15 July 1870. The rules allowed for one representative from each regiment to take part in the competition and a total of fifteen regiments and corps participated in the event. Unfortunately, the reward for gaining first prize is not recorded.
Corporal Underhill enlisted with the 13th Regiment at Winchester, Hampshire, on 22 June 1858 and was discharged to pension on 29 July, 1879.
The original photograph is held in the Archives of the Somerset Light Infantry Museum, Mount Street, in Taunton. The permission of the Curator to reproduce the photograph is duly acknowledged.
